Meet Our Board: Russell Beaty

With a career rooted in fire rescue and emergency management, Russell Beaty has spent decades serving vulnerable populations. That experience—combined with church and community volunteering—sparked a lasting passion for accessible community mental health services and family support.

Through his work with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, Russell was assigned to serve on the board of directors for COPE Center, later known as Chautauqua Healthcare Services before becoming part of Lakeview Center.

It didn’t take long before the mission resonated.

“Once you work in this field,” he said, “you see the impact that mental health has on a person, on a family and on the community.”

From Escambia to Walton County, Lakeview Center offers 60+ programs ranging from outpatient counseling and psychiatry to 24/7 residential treatments and mental health crisis support.

Russell later transitioned to serving on the board of directors of FamiliesFirst Network, a sister company to Lakeview Center, providing child protective services in Northwest Florida.

“What I saw just amazed me,” Russell said. “The work FamiliesFirst Network does married perfectly with what I believe in—strengthening families and protecting children. When you listen to the people, it’s amazing the impact we have on people’s lives and this community.”

Why this work matters

FamiliesFirst Network provides case management and child protective services to keep kids safe and strengthen families. To Russell, this mission strikes at the heart of community well-being.

“Families are the foundational unit of society,” he said. “When dysfunction enters that unit, the problems can pass from generation to generation if we don’t intervene and break the cycle.”

Russell is particularly moved by the people behind the work. While success stories are numerous from FamiliesFirst Network to Lakeview Center, he says what stands out most is the compassion and dedication of our staff.

“Every time I interact with employees across the organization, I’m blown away,” he shared. “Everyone is mission-driven and genuinely cares. My job as a board member is to help them be successful.”

Rooted in Walton County

Russell has called Freeport home since 2010 and describes himself as “a Walton County guy.”

“It has that small-town, rural feel,” he said. “There’s real need here, but also real trust that has to be built, especially around mental health services.”

As Walton County continues to grow rapidly, Russell sees both opportunity and urgency.

“The depth of the need is bigger than I ever imagined, and it’s only growing,” he said. “As a board, we have to think about how we improve, expand and sustain services without losing what makes us exceptional.”

Looking ahead

“Our goal is to remain the preeminent family services organization in Northwest Florida,” he said. “That means growing wisely, protecting quality and always staying focused on helping people.”

When deciding where to invest his time, Russell’s guiding principle is simple.

“If I’m going to spend time away from my own family,” he said, “it’s going to be to help build and strengthen other families.”

That commitment is what continues to shape Russell Beaty’s leadership on the FamiliesFirst Network board. To stay up-to-date with FamiliesFirst news or get involved with supporting children and families in need, subscribe to our e-newsletter or make a donation online
