Professional growth journey: Samantha Jones

Samantha Jones entered the field of child welfare with a mission to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. Twelve years ago, her mother became a foster parent to two children in what was intended to be a temporary arrangement. Today, those children are still part of their family. Witnessing their transformation from experiencing trauma to thriving has inspired Samantha to pursue a career where she can help others achieve the same kind of healing.

Today, Samantha serves as a case manager with FamiliesFirst Network, covering Walton and Okaloosa counties in out-of-home judicial cases. Her role is to help families overcome barriers such as substance misuse, domestic violence and parenting challenges, with the goal of children safely returning home. She monitors progress, coordinates services and advocates for the best interests of the children on her caseload.

Samantha spent nearly four years as a support worker, where she handled visits and transport. When FamiliesFirst Network updated its qualifications to recognize professional experience alongside formal education, she stepped into the role she had long aspired to. “I don’t have a degree, but I had the experience—and the passion. Getting into this role was a huge personal success.”

One of the most powerful stories from Samantha’s career centers around a 15-year-old girl who had spent most of her life in and out of the foster care system. “She’s been in so many placements, and none of them felt stable,” Samantha explained. “But in April, I found her a home where she’s safe, supported and the caregivers are wanting to adopt her.”

This wasn’t just a win—it was a breakthrough. Samantha also found safe, permanent placements for the teen’s siblings, all with caregivers who had never been considered before. “No one had explored these non-relatives, but I did. And now, they’re living their best lives. They’re thriving.”

Beyond individual cases, Samantha has seen growth in herself and her organization. She’s also learned to balance compassion with boundaries. “You can’t say yes to everything. You’ll burn out. It’s OK to ask for help and to say no sometimes. You have to protect your mental health to keep showing up for these kids.”

Looking ahead, Samantha’s goal is to continue to serve families. “I just want to be the best case manager I can be. There’s still so much to learn, and I want to keep growing so I can help these families even more.”

Samantha Jones is more than a case manager—she’s a relentless advocate and a living example of how compassion and determination can change lives.
