At FamiliesFirst Network, our Young Adult Services Program serves as a vital resource for youth aging out of foster care. Leading the program is Melody Kohr, a dedicated child welfare professional with more than 20 years of service. Melody has spent her career supporting young people on their path to independence.
Melody’s journey into child welfare began shortly after college while working at a boys’ group home. She quickly found herself drawn to teenagers, wanting to support them as they faced unique challenges.

“I just knew teenagers were my path. I gravitate toward that age group,” she shares.
When the agency transitioned into what is now FamiliesFirst Network, Melody found her dream role in Independent Living. Now known within the organization as Young Adult Services, the program helps young adults develop the skills, confidence and support systems they need as they transition into adulthood.
“We strive to create a supportive environment where young adults can become self-sufficient,” Melody explains. “This work is truly my calling.”
A proud Pensacola native, Melody is also the proud mom of two sons—Jackson and Brody. Her deep ties to the community and unwavering dedication to her work make her an inspiring example of service and impact.
Throughout her tenure, Melody has witnessed the program’s development firsthand.
“You’ve got to learn to flow with it, adjust and do what needs to be done to meet the young adult’s needs,” she says.
One of the most persistent challenges her team faces is housing stability. Through perseverance and strong community partnerships, they’ve built meaningful relationships with local apartment complexes to ensure youth have access to safe and stable environments. “Housing is always our number one issue, but we’ve developed great working relationships to support our young adults.”
Staying informed is an essential part of Melody’s approach. She emphasizes the importance of staying up-to-date with laws, policies and best practices through ongoing training and professional development.
“FamiliesFirst Network has always valued ongoing education, allowing me to attend conferences and build my skills so I can better serve our young adults.”
